The incident took place on Tuesday, Nov. 27 when the 72-year-old owner was taking "Precious" for a walk on Amherst Drive in Yonkers when a large dog came out of nowhere and grabbed the 20-pound dog in its mouth and began attacking the dog, said the elderly woman's daughter, Pamela Stern.
The woman was knocked to the ground and was unable to get up. Luckily, Stern said, a nearby neighbor happened to be doing yard work and saw what happening and saved the woman and the dog.
Precious has been at an animal hospital since the attack and undergone two surgeries. She might be facing a third, Stern said.
"What if a small child had been along for the walk?" she said.
The family contacted police and animal control but have not been able to identify the large dog that attacked Precious.
Anyone with information regarding a large dog in the Amherst Drive and Donnybrook Place area is asked to contact the Yonkers Police.
